How fundamental is food, how amazing is the world of flavor and delectable smell? The collapse of American cooking, its regimentation, standardization, its surrender to mass production and the cult of speed, can be fundamentally linked to our puritan views toward sex. Why is it such a scandal that Janet Jackson flashed her breast on TV? It's the same rejection of carnality that led to mass food. And of course, we're luridly drawn to what we reject. So people gorge themselves on stuff like McDonald's, hoping, maybe, to compensate for lack of flavor with sheer *bulk*. And since sex is so demonized, we're also hooked on junk sex, bad porn, speedy copulations. Is it any wonder why Viagra is such a huge seller? Men evidently lost the ability to keep it up for any length of time just as women were demanding that *they* get something from fucking. There are a lot of sad things about this country. Every time you have a good meal, prepared by hand with local ingredients, every time you have good sex, you're slowly moving toward a revolution of pleasure that might just save this place from itself.
