Picked up Soul Caliber again after who knows how many years. Probably a decade since the last version I played was the one for the Dreamcast. This time I got Soul Caliber IV because it was $15 and I didn't get V because I'm a cheap bastard. Oddly enough I was able to beat story mode with Taki and Ivy on normal difficulty after only two attempts and not bothering to research any moves. Game play hasn't changed much in all this time and while the controller is different it didn't take me long to remember all my favorite combos. Naturally most of them are the same but a few are different and of course there are a slew of new moves to work on. I've never used training mode so much in my life.
By far my favorite character is Ivy but my best character is Taki. I was sad to see Hwang gone but Kilik and Seung Mina are still there. So is Maxi but I never liked him. The only new character I tried was the bonus character Shura I earned for beating story mode and I don't like her either. I haven't touched Nightmare or Cervantes both of whom made the game all too easy for me the last time around. Last but not least is Xianghua but the designers made her fucking annoying. Of the new characters Tira looks the most evil and The Apprentice is my greatest challenge. Hilde looks interesting and Zasalamel just looks like another version of Astaroth. Voldo is still the only character I've never played on any version, not even the original Soul Edge coin op game.
Pretty much all of the characters over the top styles are what turned me off to this series. Ivy's tits are big enough to stop bullets and Siegfried's armor has more tail fins than a 1950's Cadillac dealership. Taki also looks completely ridiculous in her alternate outfit. She's supposed to be a ninja but she looks like a reject from Cirque Du Soleil.
Still, it is a fun game I must admit and Ivy's alternate costume is pretty bad ass. In fact, you may see me cross playing her at this year's Fanime. As long as my job works out I'll have the money to go so hopefully you'll see me there!
