I have a SEVERELY infected snug piercing, and it's starting to really worry me. It's swollen to high hell, bright red, throbbing and excruciatingly painful - I feel like someone took a 2x4 to the side of my face. At this point it's so swollen that the barbell is tearing into my skin.....not good.

do what my mom used to tell me...if you bang your head against a wall for 5 minutes, it will take your mind off your other pain. and it will feel REALLY good when you stop.

I would talk to your piercer before doing anything. Taking it out can sometimes trap an infection in the wound... If the jewelry is too tight, changing it may help--and some antibiotics...but definitely go see your piercer FIRST and asap. skull
