So...

My grandpap died this morning.

I was really bummed out because I never got my PhD before he passed and he was a big inspiration in my journey towards academia. Also he and I loved opera, and I would have loved to sing for him again.

Although my mom said mourning is a self-indulgent act, he's fine and doesn't want to "rot around and stink up the place" so things are progressing quickly. He didn't want us to be sad, so he arranged everything in a living will, and my mom said he wouldn't want me to come home when I have so much more life to life. I have to follow his example. He'd been born in Yugoslavia, came to America with no knowledge of the language and a 6th grade education. He made a living for his family by pouring cement and making beautiful things. He saw the pyramids and climbed Maccu Piccu. I'll miss having him as a part of my life. But one sweet thing is he's giving his father's wedding ring (which was also his) to my cousin's little boy. It was one of the last things he planned for his family.

I also finished a NY Times crossword puzzle - so I know he HAD to help me as the reigning crossword champ in our family.

I just wish I could have seen him next month as planned.

I tried to find a picture or something of him online, but when I googled his last name, I found a crazy white supremacist guy making death threats about my mom! eeek Long story short, my mom used to do PR work for the US government and a lot of people used her as a target for their rage against paying taxes. The things you never know about you mom when you're a little kid, huh?

This day is no good at all, I want a do over. Double frown

PS: I'm also not looking forward to this snow that's coming, but as far as list of priorities go, it's kind of one more yucky thing going on today.

From your memories alone, he will live eternal. I send my heartfelt condolences.
