With the election in a dead heat from Mid August to day it is likely that the debates will be the impetus for a big swing, though the recent issues on Wall Street are bringing the economy back to the forefront and that is a strong issue for Obama. If Obama makes his case on a stage vs. McCain during the debates then he will be elected.

There was a great article about the swing states on the electoral map today in the National Journal. In all the states, McCain's strong suit is experience and Obama's is "understand the needs and priorities of people like me." In general many people are nervous about the future because McCain represents more of the same (which they are strongly against) and Obama represents a great leap into the unknown.

If Obama stands up well vs. McCain's experience on the same stage then the election is his. If not, he still may win but it will be a squeaker as doubts will persist and people will go into the voting booth weighing fear of more of the same vs. fear of the unknown.
