Pretty much made an old lady cry yesterday. Love it. Yes ma'am, you do have to pay if we fix your computer. Yes ma'am, you were told this in advance, as well as how much it was going to be, 40 dollars. Yes, it's still 40 dollars now. No ma'am, I don't think you're being treated with a lack of dignity because we're asking for payment for our services. Yes ma'am, you can talk to a manager, but you already did. Our manager was the first person you spoke to when you brought your computer in, and he's the one who told you how much it was going to be. Nothing's changed except the work is finished. No ma'am, crying in the store isn't going to make the 40 dollar fee go away.
I'm torn between annoyance, and sadness and pity towards the senile old lady.
I have no problems with people crying over traumatic stuff. No problems there. But over little life stuff?
Girl, about 20, walks in with her dad and a blown up laptop. Warranty issues mean I'm not allowed to repair it, it has to be sent out, but it'll be back in usually under 2 weeks. Conversation goes as follows.
Me: Okay, so we're sending it out, we'll get it fixed for you, or if we can't we'll replace it. Just so you know, there's a chance your hard drive will need to be replaced and you'll lose everything on it. If there's anything on it you need, I can take it off before we send it out, but it's not covered by warranty and it'll cost 80 bucks, we'd have to take the laptop apart, take the hard drive out, bypass the XP file ownership settings and back it up, so basically I need you to decide if there's anything on there that's worth 80 bucks to you.
Girl: So I'll lose my pictures?
Me: Well, it's not guaranteed one way or the other, but it's possible. If you want a guarantee, I'll back it up for you.
At this point, the girl starts to tear up.
Girl's Dad: Do you want the stuff off there?
Girl: I don't have 80 dollars
Girl's Dad: I can pay if you don't have the money right now, but is it worth it? Is it stuff you need or want?
At this point, girl starts crying. Her dad looks at me and says "Nevermind, just get it fixed I guess."
I feel bad. I know how much it sucks to lose everything on your computer. But it drives me nuts when people get so paralyzed by simple life situations that they can't react. Especially when they A. It's not all that major(Sounds like just pictures she's gonna lose, nothing life threatening, just kinda sad to lose memories in pixel form), B. You're being offered a way out, albeit a slightly expensive one.

Huh. And I thought it was 'cause I was big, ugly and scary. Oh well.

But seriously, imo, she's crying=she's a girl.
The one thing that you're missing here is that you are a man and you were dealing with females in both of these situations. SOME girls are just emotional and can't do practical spontanious problem solving at all. Don't get me wrong, you wouldn't catch me dead, crying in a stressful situation. Most girls now days have both the guts and the balls that men do. We control our emotions and take charge in any situation. I can tell you that while running my tattoo studio I have had so many situations where ppl take out their shitty day and all their personal crap on you. Like if we're running 5 mins behind and they start yelling. However, I've also had the same situation as you where I was being professional and then some broad just burst into tears! It's horrible and makes you feel really shitty, but what are you gonna do? Wave the fee because she's on her period? No freakin way.
...haha so there's my insensitive thing for today haha.
