Do You Hear Sleigh Bells?
After over 40 years living in Alaska, I still is snow at this time of year. Where I am now living on the East Coast there might be a few days where a snowfall hangs around. The only upswing of this kind of snow is that one doesn’t need to shovel it, and I admit I do not miss that activity at all!
There were some amazing things to do in an Alaskan winter and one I wish I had done one more time was to go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride.
My last time was about 30 years ago, and that was in the Matanuska Valley about an hour’s drive north of Anchorage. It was as magical as you could imagine. Warm clothes, a few blankets and someone to cuddle with while traversing the relative wilds of the snowbound Valley paths was very Romantic. Yeah, it was cold, no question about it, but the Beauty and Romance of it more than made up for it.
I think I may have been a total of three times, and most of those were with a group, as they were never cheap to book, but to hear those sleigh bells ring with a snowfall and dusky to dark skies….unparalleled!
A funny musing is that all the sleigh rides were done before modern phones and tablets, so there are no pictures extant that I know of or remember. I wish there were…
