so, two nights each week, the kickboxing school has jiu-jitsu classes... not traditional jiu-jitsu, more like mixed-martial-arts (MMA) groundfighting classes. i'm pretty familiar with this style of combat from cross-training with my original instructor, but i have been out of the loop for the last few years.

i think i have been wrestling with my girlfriends for far too long, as during my first round of wrestling, i double-tapped my opponent on the ribs while i was behind him, to try to intimidate him and make him think i was going for something on that side of his body. OF COURSE, tapping on your opponents body in MMA is an indication that you are giving up. so i pretty much said "uncle" while i was in control. thankfully, i didn't try to tickle him to get out of a hold or kiss him behind the ear to break his concentration.

this is what happens when your only physical contact is with the ladies. (FYI palo is a fierce and stubborn fighter, but i know her weak spots biggrin).

it was just as hard of a work-out as the kickboxing was though. i had no idea it would be so tough. but, i guess an hour and twenty minutes of cardio drills and grappling with a steady stream of partners will do that to you.

tonights highlight came from one of my instructors who was watching me during a drill where i had to throw my opponent off of my chest (or otherwise escape) while i was laying on my back. i tried all of the techniques i knew, and couldn't shake him by bucking and pulling, so finally, in one last, all-out burst, i bucked my hips and pulled him forward, and actually JETTISONED him off of my chest, nearly throwing him into a column. to which the instructor commended:

"well, when technique doesn't work, there is always brute strength."

(to be fair, i outweighed him by maybe 70 pounds and later in the night, he kicked my ass on the pull-up bar, where i, in all of my wussiness, had to do 10 sets of 5, just to make it through the class).

***

in other news, Sparklehorse is still, in my opinion, the greatest thing that ever happened to music.
