whoa-oh, whoa, oh oh oh, whoa-oh...
i have now seen the Misfits 5 times. rock.
yes, they may be Danzig-less, they may be Doyle-less, they may be Michale Graves-less, and yes, it really is silly that they are still called the Misfits, but at the end of the day, if Jerry Only, Marky Ramone, and Dez Cadena say they are going to be at a specified location, playing songs by the Misfits, the Ramones, and Black Flag for an hour, well, dammit, i don't care what they're calling it, i'm gonna show up and dance.
they played better Saturday night than they did on their Halloween show 2002 in Times Square, NYC. Jerry's vocals had improved and Marky was slowed down enough for Jerry and Dez to keep up with the beat.
thats enough for the show review, what really rocked about this particular Misfits show was the crowd, particularly, the kids in the circle pit with me and the pants. with the exception of one le bag douche everyone was cool. there were a pile of shitty opening bands, one of which was a SHITTY electro-dance spooky band that sucked ass. i'm all for dance music, but these kids just blew. i decided though, that since they wouldn't leave the stage, i'd dance to their music like it was THE ONLY MUSIC THAT MATTERED... i got a couple of cool kids to join me in my little dance party. it was pretty funny, dancing like i was at a club while i was at a punk show.
anyway, eventually the Misfits got started up and it was pretty crazy through the early Misfits tunes, not too dangerous or anything, it was all little kids and teenagers and stuff, but still, too aggressive for me and the pants to skank around the circle. eventually it slowed down, people got tired and we were able to bust our phat moves to the Ramones tunes and to the 50's covers they have been playing (This Magic Moment and Runaway). it was pretty cool. i found the kids i was dancing with earlier and got them both to dance with me, as well as another girl who was standing nearby.
this one kid was about 15 or 16, i think it was his first Misfits show. he kept getting all excited when i would acknowledge him. he had this look on his face like he didn't want to stand off to the side, he wanted to be dancing and i kept looking at him and saying, "dude, you know you want to." sure enough, he came out and danced with me, we shook hands after the show, it was pretty cool. another kid i was dancing with turned to me and hugged me right at the beginning of "death comes ripping." i thought that was awesome. we didn't talk, we were just both psyched about dancing and screaming Misfits lyrics.
i very rarely get to shows where there is this much fun, good vibes, and friendships throughout. i love seeing the Misfits because the songs they play have a lot of power and they know it and the kids know it, and regardless of whatever the critics and the hardcore punk loyalists have to say about it, its nice as fuck being out for a night with a crowd of people you have never met who know all of the words to "die, die my darling" and scream them with just as much enthusiasm as you do.
