While in San Deigo Matt and I stayed at our boss's gorgeous house in the country, she wanted me to paint some murals in her bathroom and an Irish pub on the first floor.
The Irish Pub came about because their house is English Tudor, and originally they were going to do an English pub. But her daughter married an Irish man who was dying of Lou Gherig's disease. They built another house on the property for him and his wife to live his last days in. He actually passed away on their property and they had an Irish funeral for him.
They loved him so much my boss decided to do the pub over as Irish. She and her hubby are both Irish as well. So we came up with the idea of wrapping an Irish saying around the top of the wall near the ceiling that would be in a Celtic font, with some Celtic illustrations put in here and there. She and her daughter picked a saying that reminded them of him, it was, "You, the one with the smile, wrap a corner of it around my shoulders and warm me happy too for a while." I painted it with a translucent green to make it look like it was sort of old, and used an antique gold dropshadow on the letters and around the Celtic drawings.
I gave them a cd with The Pogues, Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphy's so they could rock out Mic style.
The bathroom was done in a French style right out of a magazine, and she wanted French flowers on some of the cabinet doors and a full door.
This was so fun to do. I felt privileged to do this kind of thing that obviously meant so much to them, and really these are some fine good people, the best in the world.
Matt and I were playing around with his new Canon 20D digital and got some really good pics of me being a ho on our dining room table.
