It’s like extracting teeth, or trying to break through a wall with one’s fingers. It’s like punching someone in the fist with one’s face, or pulling a bus up a hill. This is modern day communication. Trying to exchange with someone, trying to engage in conversation with someone. Everyone is receiving so many text messages and whatsapp messages and they have facebook and instagram and a plethora of other digital mechanisms for messaging so no one can focus on one conversation or method of communication. Until you have truly won the heart of someone there is simply no way of communicating freely with them. Responses come in a day or two or three later. Responses come that are disjointed and broken and have no relation to the question that was asked. Inviting someone to do something is difficult because everyone is waiting for the last minute best offer and confessing any interest in anyone is a fatal move that causes panic and fear followed by silence. Insecurities creep into the words that we use – people no longer say ‘children’, they say ‘kiddos’… why? – and we skip words entirely – ‘how you doing?’ rather than ‘how are you doing?’ What did ‘are’ do to you? Communication is the most vital component of human relationships and yet it is broken and dismembered. In business we are given textbook jargon that we are told to use to make it appear that we are in line with the modern vernacular and in our private relationships we are starting to read books that teach us ‘how to play the game’. Why is it a game? Why can we not be ourselves? It is games that result in relationships with someone who becomes a ‘stranger’. This stranger is actually the real person that you got involved with once their mask is removed and the acting and game playing has ended. The divorce rate is around 50% because most people don’t even bother, they just meet other people and get on with it without bothering to go through the legal hassle of divorce.
Love yourself, love your life, find happiness in what you do and try to enjoy every day because no one else will bring sustainable happiness into your life if you don’t already have it. Listen to people. Remain humble. Be compassionate and free.
