'true love' timothy r gates, 7/22/2008
true love?
i was told,
the first time i recall hearing this refrain
is at four years of age,
'True love lasts forever!'
(only lovers, who are friends
argue and make up;
we take the time for the healing,
the fear of each other's breaking,
the tears shared with each other's aching.
Why don't married folks
give each other
at least the same benefit of doubt,
our best friends, always our best friends,
no matter what?
Maybe, just perhaps,
this is why the narcissism
of my generation's supposed anarchism
will find themselves,
weeping dry tears,
in our bedroom's twilight, in our eighties.
-Those poor misguided folks,
WWII partners in housekeeping,
they stayed together 'for the kids.'
It's too bad they'll not know
our generation's loneliness
when mine and those afterwards
reach this return
to waddling.)
i see his tough-guy fists
hit her small frame,
hear her arrogant,
in your face challenge,
to his twice the size of her body's attention,
-i recall this from around four too.
'True love lasts forever!'
This is when I began to talk
with God;
go figure.
(This is when I first heard,
'Everything happens for a reason.'
Bullshit.
Aphorism's proverb,
merely an excuse
for poor behavior,
given a lingerie's lace,
making fucked-up
and fucked-down
homonyms of wedded euphemisms.)
i'm glad that they're together,
today.
Damn, but
they surely fucked-up,
and fucked-down
a four year old's speech pattern.
