Peace comes to us face to face with our own selves and whether we choose to see others as merely merchants for our pleasure. If we choose Peace then War is inevitable, for many there be that desire to disquiet the spirit of one who sees the path of nonviolence as the means to confronting hatred, the true motivation for War. Yet this path of Peace is never passive, inactive or quiet. The sort of noise is not that of guns, bombs and that of weeping motherless streamed infants. The sound of the mystic may be wordless, yet say more than the greatest statesperson. To learn to sit in silence for a moment a day and to attend awakened in that moment gives us the possibility to be awake during other moments. The clatter and chatter of sleep-walking is what leads to the vice of deciding who is or are lovable. Once we decide who are the pretty ones, the chaste ones, the politically correct ones, then such vice opens the door to justify the elimination of any others. This is War. War disregards the face to face contact of the other. Peace is only true where we look into the mirror first, face to face with our own beings, then with those we happen to dislike for whatever reason, also face to face, and to realize that my first neighbor is myself. 'We shall overcome,' is a song of prayer, hope and resolve. 'We' is simply the collective movement of 'I' in synergy. When 'I' turn my other cheek it gives 'you' or the other 'I' an opportunity to connect. The only question is what sort of connection.
Peace is possible for those who choose to Love, a word that is useless and void of meaning if not found as a verb.
