i have nothing interesting to write about so go away. i'm bored at work and typing is just something i can do with my hands that doesn't involve putting them down the front of my pants.
its friday and damn near oscar time so that means there's tons of movie-related news in the rags lately. seeing as we're in the dead time that proceeds the academy awards, the studios have unleashed a few low-brow and lower-budgeted flicks with hopes of starting off another fiscal year close enough to the black that video revenue will bump them up into profitability by the end of the year.
leading the way is the genY2K version of breakin 2: the electric boogaloo, you got served, which stars the pimple pop lockers b2k in a quest to land $50g's and a gig being background dancers on a lil' kim video. those stupid kids, they'd have a better chance getting in the vid if ratgirl smuggled their skinny asses on to the set.
next up is the big bounce, adapted by the brothers warner from an elmore leonard book. unfortunately, most of leonard's good books have already made into flicks (pulp fiction/rum punch, jackie brown, get shorty, out of sight.. and the sequel to get shorty, be cool, is in production). and there's a good reason for that. i think i'll hold off on watching this movie until warner sends me my free copy in a few months.
lastly, paramount is offering up the perfect score, what looks to be a decent offering thanks to the yum-tastic scarlett johansson. the yum-tastic scarlett johansson. its worth saying twice. the tag "from the director who brought you varsity blues" is probably all you needed to know, which explains why my stab at promo copy was left out of any trailers for the perfect score.
what stands out for me is the fact that daily variety's brian lowry calls newcomer leonardo nam "a kind of latter day jeff spicoli" in his portrayal of a pothead savant, the type of characterization that steals this sort of movie. it makes this stoner proud to see an asian brother get the ever-loved role of the pothead in a movie. and i must admit that i'm kind of glad that the kids of this generation aren't saddled with the fucking travesty that is long duk dong. the donger don't need food, the donger needs some FUCKING RESPECT. then again, a chinky-eyed pothead isn't entirely different from the ah-so shuckin'&jivin' that characterized so many asians in the movies of my youth. well, arnold from happy days wasn't too bad.
in other movie news, deals have been inked for two more books to be transfered to the screen. ellroy's novel about the the black dahlia murder has been in pre-production for about a week. black dahlia is both one of my favorite true crime stories to read and also a pretty damn good example of how ellroy is a brilliant wack job. its a good book if you can finish it, a great book if you can finish it without putting your hand through a wall.
the second book whose rights are about to be secured by columbia and dreamworks is memoirs of a geisha. but i feel pretty good about my asian pothead cousin so i ain't going to get going on another rant about round-eyed cultural hegemony.
