today marks the 29th wedding anniversary of my parents. so happy anniversary, mom and dad!
back when daddy-went-a-courtin', he actually had a selection of women from which he was to choose a bride. his family had achieved a certain level of prominence back in the day in his native south korea and when the time came for dad to get hitched, the newspapers ran all kinds of speculative stories about who the lucky gal would be. the rumor mill churned out various names ranging from one of the daughters of the president to the niece of former chinese premier chiang kai-shek.
my maternal and paternal grandfathers were very good friends and in the end, they pushed their kids together with the intentions of spawning some grandchildren to spoil in the years to come. i think my dad really lucked out because judging from old wedding photos, mom was H-O-T. of course, its worth mentioning that mom is still a certifiable knock out.
with that i raise my cup of tea in a toast to 29 happy and prosperous years of wedded bliss. my folks have set the standard against which successful marriages should be measured.
