some friends were visiting over the weekend and we took an excursion downtown, first to chinatown for dim sum and then to little tokyo for rare sneaker shopping. i like going downtown because you can take the subway from my apartment to union station. that alone is worth repeating. you can take the subway from my apartment (in hollywood) to downtown's union station. it is almost unfathomable to consider that los angeles has a metro rail system after nearly a century of corruption and collusion on the part of city planners and corporate interests such as the automobile and oil industries.

walking through little tokyo i noticed that the museam of contemporary art is just around the corner from my favorite noodle shop. the new exhibit at moca is called ecstasy and is an investigation into altered states. the compilation of exhibits is pretty much one big trip, with images, lights, glass paintings, and lots of other stuff to expand your mind.

my friends and i saw the huge banner that read ECSTASY hanging outside the museam and our interest was immediately piqued. the decision process to check out the exhibit was almost instant as was the ritualisitic sparking of my pipe (i'm damn near always carrying) prior to entering the museam. suffice it to say i'm baking magic goodies and going back soon.

fashionistas will recognize contributions from murakami. my personal favorite was the gigantic pencil sketches from paul noble. there was a definite escher quality. and the crazy sexed up room created by eli sudbrak that channeled the milk bar from a clockwork orange. but with more vivid colors and imagery.

another favorite was a large dark room illuminated by LEDs that were suspended from the ceiling. it made for a huge grid of lights. but one that you could walk through and around. i don't know how much time i spend sitting in the corner and looked at the planes of light that developed by simply shifting my head around.

the exhibit runs through february and tickets are $5 for students and $8 for people too old to pass for students. i'll be going at least a few more times between now and closing. let me know if you want to come with and we can get soupy noodles in little tokyo afterwards.
