River rafting was a blast! I kayaked the class III rapids, 3 days in a row with no problem smile Lots of adrenalyn though!! This was only my second time river kayaking and the first time I had ever been through this size of rapids. I was ok with the chance that I might go over and felt really confident in myself that if that happended I would respond well. Anyway, I did go over but not in the class III. I went over a large boulder with a sizable hole and my kayak went sideways. I tried to correct using my paddle on the wave side of the kayak which was the wrong move because the water caught it and threw me over. The water wasn't even cold! But it was freezing actually but I didn't even notice. I first noticed that it was hard to get my head up out of the water to breathe because
my knees were still strapped in! So I immediately kicked my legs out straight and I came up easily. The kayak was turned upside down and still right next to me and the paddle was underneath...the river was moving at a pretty good speed. I handed the paddle to Miguel and flipped over the kayak, all the while still in the water. My heart was going pretty good but I wasn't really scared - just super amped up and kinda week knee'd. I was able to pull myself back into the kayak by myself and get strapped up. As soon as I was in I turned around to see where Miguel was and leaned to far and flipped over again!!! That was funny though and I got to repeat all ov the above and get back in. It felt really good to have the 'boat turning over' first time out of the way and felt especially good to know that I am competent and able in that situation. Hell yeah! So I really want to go again!
andnowmiguel and I ran the river 3 times in 3 days, it was really scenic and beautiful. I have pictures only of really mellow river moments for obvious reasons kiss

The second day we tried to hitchhike back from our truck at the takeout so that we could run the river and have our truck waiting for us. NOBODY stopped for us!!! Tons of big rigs drove by with plenty of room but everybody was too skerrrrred. surreal So we had to walk back to the take out, get the truck and drive back to the put-in and find a ride. Hitchhiking isn't what it used to be! frown

This is the gorge that Seattle City light uses to power us up, which was only a few miles upriver. The river rapids stay at a pretty even constant because of this dam which makes it a good river for riding.

I finished reading A Prayer for Owen Meany. I LOVED it so much on so many levels. I definately recommend it. I need some book recommendations! I'm so in a reading mode these days and I'm all out of fresh books. What should I read next??

Here we are at the take-out, super happy about the ride and also happy to be puting on warm, dry clothes. The class III rapid is close to the take out so we're still full of endorphins and feeling pretty good. There were tons of mosquitos here.

It was just a really beautiful and fun weekend. The Goodell Campground was gorgeous, I'm definately going back and I'm definately going river kayaking again smile

Should you get the chance, read some William Gibson. He is the father of the Cyberpunk genre, and lives near you in Vancouver, BC... Try Burning Chrome... its a collection of short stories, and should let you know if you like him. I also read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay... it was an excellent read set against the backdrop of the emerging comic book industry of New York City in the thirties and forties, and finally, one my brother recommended, Carter Beats The Devil, a historical fiction thriller about Houdini Contemporary, Carter the Great. And for Non Fiction, Jared Diamond's Guns Germs and Steel. Let me know what you think if you read any of them!
