A client today told me that he reviewed the survey with his client and said that it lacked visual appeal. I said, sure, we could spice the template up a bit. We just have to be careful not to draw attention away from the question text itself.

Well, no, that wasn't what he was thinking at all. He and his client wanted me to make the survey explode, change colors, have a big red X appear onscreen, or maybe even all of the above all at once when a respondent made a selection. You know, to jazz it up a little.

I swear to god he said all that.

EXPLODE. BIG RED X. CHANGE COLORS.

I was so pissed off.

I sent him an e-mail, saying firmly,

"Look, if you're concerned about respondents getting bored because the survey is too long, the answer isn't to try to entertain them by flashing things at them, it's to trim the survey down, or coax the respondents along."

"If you really want that kind of nonsense, I direct you to Zoomerang.com. But I'm not doing it."

I felt like such a bad ass. If he does take his business elsewhere though, that's like $1,800 and a week worth of work already completed down the hole.

It's great when you have the freedom to exercise your judgment, rather than cave in.
