Had an interesting situation today:

Company A, a company based in Bangalore, India, gave me a bid of $1,000 for the project I talked about in my last entry.

Company B, a guy working out of his home in Colorado, bid $1,750 for the same project.

Assuming that both companies are telling the truth about timing, quality and all that -- the Indian company sounds like they'd be a better choice, even if they weren't $750 cheaper.

Would you pick the American?

In other news, Lankakitten was driving our mustang to a pet sit when a 76 year old man accelerated from a side-street, hitting her broadside. The guy was at a stop sign but just drove out into thru traffic without looking. She's fine (luckily), but we're both pissed. The car was an anniversary gift from me to her and now it's all fucked up due to no fault of hers. The passenger side is wrecked.

I'm sure the insurance money will come through. The thing is though, it's not a new Honda or something. It's a forty-year old classic car with a personality. It's not exactly replaceable. And after fixing it, it won't be the same.

Makes me sad.

In side news, I'm considering switching my main programming language from Perl to Ruby. Java made me angry and worried in an undefinable way.

Trader Joes is fucking cheap.

Two of the companies I asked for bids are a little sensitive about the Indian company being a competitor (i.e. "Please keep us in mind as an onshore alternative if you are not happy with the coding and service you receive from offshore processing.")
