A customer of mine was wrapping up his year-end accounts and discovered that he hadn't paid me for three research studies back in Spring, so he asked for an invoice. I put it together and realized that it came out to $13,000, which is a lot of money on an individual level, but on a business level it's just enough to start thinking about re-investing it in the business and you know what? I really hate my business. So why not just do something completely different?

I've been talking about opening a bar all weekend. And I'm pretty serious about it.

In case you're interested, you may not be, that's okay -- the estimate seems to be that a small bar (starbucks-sized) would cost $50 - $75,000 to open. So we don't have near enough money to get started. But maybe, if we live like paupers, we can save over the coming year, you know -- actually prepare -- and then be ready in the winter of '06.

I'm smart enough to admit when I don't know fuck all about a topic. And about running a physical store, I don't know shit, because I've never worked retail. So my plan is to hire (or get people involved, *cough*, cosyne) who actually do know this stuff, and in the meantime, try to learn what I can through classes and books and so on, so I can at least follow along with what more knowledgeable people are saying. For instance, this morning I signed up for some extension courses at Bellevue Community College aimed at small business owners.

* Bookkeeping, payroll, taxes
* "Creative" financing for startups

And I signed up for a course on bartending that at the end, I'll be licensed to tend bar in the state of Washington. Kind of cool, no?

Are bars as risky as restaurants? What kind of atmosphere or crowd would you aim to have? Like the booze-making, it's a very cool idea for a business - and thankfully more realistic.
