My apartment search continues, but holy shit is it hard to find an a place in New york for 500 or under. Astoria offers a little hope, but it's even expensive there. Really, Austin seems nice and all, but it's NEW YORK FUCKING CITY. All of the above applies to Boston as well. I'm going to give myself about another week of looking for a cheap place in the Northeast, then I'm going to just give up and go to Austin. Which isn't a bad thing by any measure.

Unless you wanna live in a complete shithole in the Northeast, you aren't gonna find a place to live for that cheap. I had a friend who just moved away from Boston, she said that crappy studio apartments start around $700 a month. Good luck finding a place to live--I hear that Austin is a nice place.
