Dozens Of Children Slain As Soldiers Hand Out Candy
BAGHDAD, Iraq-- At least 37 people, most of them children, have been killed by multiple explosions that rocked a western Baghdad neighborhood celebrating the opening of a new sewage system.
Hospital and military officials say at least 137 people were wounded -- including 10 U.S. soldiers. One hospital official says 35 of the dead are children. The soldiers were apparently handing out candy to the children at the time of the bombing, CNN reported.
The blasts -- two car bombs and a roadside bomb -- went off near a U.S. convoy in the western part of the Iraqi capital.
It's the biggest number of children killed in any insurgent attack since the conflict in Iraq began 17 months ago.
It's not clear if the U.S. convoy was the target -- or if the bombs were aimed at a sewage system ceremony.
A U.S. helicopter evacuated some of the survivors, while other choppers circled overhead.
Earlier Thursday, a U.S. soldier was among three people killed in a suicide car-bomb attack on an Iraqi government compound outside Baghdad. Sixty other people -- including three Americans -- were wounded.
Yet another car bombing Thursday killed four people and wounded 16 in the northern city of Talafar. The apparent target there was the city police chief. He escaped
