Stalingrad...continued from sunday.
The German defeat here was the first major Soviet victory of the 1939-'45 war. After Stalingrad the Nazis never regained the initiative on the Eastern Front; the tide finally began to turn against Hitler and his attempt to dominate the whole of Europe.
The site of this famous Soviet victory is now marked by a gigantic statue of Mother Russia, which at 52 metres is just taller than Nelson's column in London. But 55 years ago Stalingrad was almost completely reduced to rubble.
