I don't think the whole "boys" thing has overtones, really, at least for most women I know who use it. It's just a cute way to say it, without saying "boyfriend" and without using something that sounds kind of overdone like "significant other". And "my man" sounds too much like a country-western song.

We should come up with an entirely new word for significant others. Like..."bez". Or something.
