I wore a mushroom top as a hat yesterday while running through a field of asparagus shoots. Upon reaching the middle of the field I stopped and looked upwards toward the sky. It was a beautiful shade of blue filled with clouds that looked like the white tips of ocean waves breaking on a sandy shore. Starring upward, I saw a small group of blue birds with white bellies flying in the distance. As I watched them fly across the sky, I realized that they were not as close as I had originally thought. After a few minutes their flight path brought them closer to me, and I realized that they were not birds at all. They were, in fact, blue whales swimming through the sky as if it really were an ocean. A few moments later they flew directly overhead, made several rubber ducky type squeaky noises, then continued to fly off into the sun. I stood there, my mushroom hat shading my face from the afternoon sun, watching them until they faded into tiny dots on the horizon.

Once the whale dots had disappeared from sight, I returned my attention to the field of asparagus shoots. Much to my surprise standing beside me was a pearly white polar bear wearing sungalsses that resembled those that Las Vegas era Elvis wore. Looking at each other he said to me, "You know, if you are going to whale watch you should at least be wearing sunglasses." It was then that he removed his Elvis shades and handed them to me. Taken aback by this random act of kindness, and sensing that he would be offended if I questioned his impromptu gesture of goodwill, I took the glasses from him and placed them on my face. Without hesitation I removed my mushroom hat and handed it to him saying, "If you are going to stand in a filed of asparagus shoots in the afternoon sun, then you should at least wear a hat to keep the sun off of you." Not wanting to offend me he took the mushroom hat from my hand and palced it on his furry white head. Then, tipping the rim of the mushroom hat with his paw, he turned and walked away. A few seconds later, without turning around, I heard him say, "Don't let something that you cannot control distract you so much that it detracts from the excitement and joy of life that is happening everyday right in front of you."
