I made a comment in GooeyToons blog about my recent trip to Allentown, Pennsylvania, to see the Dropkick Murphys play at the Crocodile Rock, and it reminded me that I had not posted about it in my own blog. So, here goes...

I am a huge fan of the Murphys. Something about the combination of classic punk and celtic folk gets me all warm and tingly inside. This show, which was incredible, not only left me warm and tingly inside but also wore me the fuck out. I have been to a ton of punk and metal shows over the past 20 years, and this one ranks in the top ten for crowd energy. From the moment the lights went down, to the crowd chanting the now popular "Lets Go Murphys, " to the chest crushing push to the front of the stage, to the never ending circle pit, the crowd never gave in. It was nonstop dancing, moshing and pushing. Even when the Murphys played Forever, a fairly slow and melodic love song, the crowd did not yield. I was truly wore out when I got back to my hotel room. I was so tired, in fact, that I did not even touch the six pack that was in the mini-fridge. I just stripped down naked, toweled off, and crashed out on the bed.

As for the music, the Murphys playlist was just about perfect. They played a ton of songs from the Sing Loud, Sing Proud and Warrior's Code CDs, which was fine by me. I loved hearing Forever, Captain Kelly's Kitchen, The Legend of Finn Maccumhail, and Sunshine Highway. Of course, they also played the crowd favorite Kiss Me, I'm Shitfaced off the Blackout CD. I was a little surprised, however, that they did not play The Spicy Mchaggis Jig, but you can't win them all.

There were three opening bands. While I did see them all play, I cannot remember what the names of the first two were. This is really unfortunate, because I really did like the sound of the second band. I do remember that one of the bands had a female lead singer who came out during the Murphys set to sing the female part of The Dirty Glass, which she nailed by the way. The Aggrolites were the third opening band and played right before the Murphys took the stage. They play something they call "dirty reggae," which sounded pretty decent. To be honest though, I think by the time they hit the stage the crowd was ready for the Murphys to play. Lets just say that they played a great set, but it was peppered with the "Lets Go Murphys" chant.

Up next...on Monday, March 26, I will be seeing Lamb of God, Trivium, Gojira, and Machinehead at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC.
