Entered a Haiku contest at school today and won a book of Emily Dickinson poems! Here:

Am I the only person who thinks it is fucking hilarrrrrious that I got a book of poems from Emily Dickinson? A crazy recluse woman poet won a book written by a crazy recluse woman poet. This is funny to me.
And I was a little flattered. For you see, there is this girl whom I call the campus stud, Mary. Mary is this beautiful punk rock English major bi girl that EVERYONE either wants to be or do and she is clearly one of the most intelligent and talented people in our major. Anyway, when I was thinking about entering the Haiku contest, she said, "You should do it! You're a better writer than I am!" To which I cracked up laughing hysterically and flew backwards 50 feet. "Me? What the hell Mary!" and she claimed that while working for one of the professors, the professor had given her some of my poems and she was impressed. I was glad. To hear a compliment from her is one of the highest honors, in my eyes. And the poem she read wasn't even one of my good ones, it was one of my cheesy Romanticist odes! (In the style of my Lola is like Ham poem) We have a rivalry like Plath and Sexton, I think. Also, I really think Mary is one of those girls that is a genius analytically but lacks the poetic soul to make a piece work. I don't consider myself very clever with the discipline of English itself AT ALL, but I think I have the energy and emotion to connect with people. Plus i've had a lot of odd experiences in my past to retell. There are still many more I haven't even put in my journals here yet. I know they say that "anybody can be a writer" but I don't think that's the case and I do think it's something you're either born with or aren't. I mean, you can study meter and genre all you want, but if you don't sense things as an artist would, how can you possibly create a piece of art that would compel an onlooker? It goes for painters and actors as well. You're just either born with the knack for it or you're not. What are your guys' views on art/the artist?
I'm so happy about the compliments on my winning haiku that I will cut my last class, read Dickinson, and perhaps go to a cafe for a little treat.

it is extremly important to have a basis in technique. it's how you get your creative impulse to realize.
mechanics are important. mechanics can be learned and should be learned...must be learned.
then you have the other aspects that make an artist...the creative impulse being key...so is observation...and interest. and imagination
I don't think people are either born or not born artists...creative impulse and observation can be encouraged. usually by exposure to the arts.
some people are by nature more inclined to be artists, but everyone can be a good artist if they put forth the effort and interest. as for the quality of the artist...it's all relative...and often the measure is in the expertise of thier technique....go figure.
it also is worth noting that the artist is only half the equation...for the audience...well....thier reaction is important too.
