..." You have often complained to me that people did'nt "understand" you! Goethe and newton did'nt complain of that...Christ alone did, but He was speaking not of his ego, but of His teaching. You are perfectly well understood. And if you don't understand yourself, it is not the fault of others.....You have only one fault. Your false position, your unhappiness, your intestinal catarrh are all due to it. it is your utter lack of culture. Please forgive me, but Veritas magis Amicitiae... You see, life sets its terms. To feel at ease among the cultivated people, to be at home and comfortable with them, one must have a certain amount of culture. Talent has brought you into that circle , you belong to it, but--you are drawn away from it, and you waver between cultured peopleand the tenants of the opposite..." Checkov, 1886, Moscow
Pretty fucking on the mark for a man who barely lived through the turn of the century. That was an excerpt from a letter he wrote to his brother--who fancied himself an artist, and dabbled at painting. His brother sounds alike like 90% of the people I know, have known, and will know at some future date. we are a society of cultural parasites feeding of the grand ideals and schools of thought which brilliant men thought up long ago....
Henry Miller wrote in the art of fiction XXVIII:
"what is an artist? He's a man who has antennae, who knows how to hook up currents which are in the atmosphere, in the cosmos: he merely has the facility for hookin on, as it were. Who is original? Everything that we are doing, everything that we think, exists already, and we are only intermediaries, that's all, who make use of what is in the air. Who do ideas, why do great scientific discoveries often occur in diffrent parts of the world at the same time? The same is true of art. They are already in the air, they have not been given voice, that's all. They need the man. the interpreter, to bring them forth." issue 28, 1962
....So what the fuck went wrong? We are cultivated people content to settle for the most basic concepts of creativity --happy to bottomfeed in the murky cultural waters inherited by us from those that came before... ...where is the new wave of antennae receptors? Why is everything deemed "cool" these days nothing but a half assed imitation of inovation that came before?......Can it be that we really are at the end of the world--standing, hands clenched, searching in vain for some new spark...some new progression which might lead us to sought after realms of enlightenment? Is this all there is?....or is it simply a matter of this: We as artist no longer understand ourselves....and therefore, we are quite content to blame the world for not understanding us...instead of pushing through and trying something new.......

Plus, the bigger the money involved in art, the more people trying to make it safely palatable for profit.
...and various other junk going on.
