One of my goals this year is to improve my photography. I had offers to shoot some small weddings, a sweet 16 and some senior pictures. I turned them all down because I wasn't confident in my own ability. I was told by someone who has assisted a pro photographer that I had a real good eye. I took the compliment well.
I was asked to shoot some profile pictures for someone at work. Facebook and for a dating site. I was smart enough to give them the lo res versions of the images. They were very pleased with the results. I took about 30 shots and got 4 real great ones out of the camera. I don't know photoshop well enough. I didnt even want to try my hand a retouching and post processing.
They were happy with the results and how much I would charge. I told them no charge tell your friends. So now it looks like I'm going to be a part time photographer.
I hope to have a paying gig by the end of this year.

I second the joining model mayhem idea. Its a great way to get started with your work, I was using it for a while for my make-up art stuff.
