There is no rule on how you are supposed to play the game.  Portugal played the way they needed to in order to win.  I do not mind the expansion of the tournament.  An expansion certainly helped to breath new life into the Americas Cup.  Getting out of the groups has some tradition behind it; the World Cup used to work that way.
