This morning I was chilling on the couch, watching 30 Rock on my netflix instant queue, and I get a call from my step-dad saying that my grandma (my mom's mom) isn't doing well at all and that I should see her in the next couple of days. I leave immediately and go see her (after stopping to get some flowers for her and my grandpa).
My grandma has cancer. Everywhere. If you put your hand on the top of your head and your other hand on your thigh, her cancer is basically between them. It's in her brain, around her lungs, her liver, her bones....And seeing her was so hard. She can't talk, swallow, move.... I think she only has a few days left in her, if even that.
So I was there for 2 hours in the afternoon and then I went back this evening. I am doing as fine as I can be. My grandmother and I were close, but not? I'm the 4th of 12 grandchildren. I have plenty of fond memories of her, but there aren't very many moments where it was just her and me. Which is okay. I admire her and I hope to be as sassy as her when I'm her age. She taught me how to read and sew, she always told me that if I fell from the trees that I climbed and broke my neck that she would spank me. And she always told me "put on a sweater, you're making me cold."

Her cancer started 6 years ago, she had breast cancer, which could have been prevented had she caught it sooner with her self exams. (However, she is a very private person and I think she just held off from telling anyone for as long as possible.) She went into remission 4 years about and about 2 years or one year ago it came back. So just a reminder to all ladies and non ladies who have lady friends, breast cancer can be treated very easily if caught early, so please be sure to do your monthly self examinations. And I love you all and want you all to be healthy. My grandmother has never smoked, never drank, lived a very healthy life with most of her food from my grandpa's garden, lived in the country with fresh air, and still ended up this way. That's life I guess.

I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma, hun.
All my warmest wishes to you and your family.

I'm going through something similar with my grandma right now. She just found out she has ovarian cancer, but hasn't even seen the oncologist yet. Her other doctors found growths, and they detected it in her blood tests, which generally means it has spread... like your grandma, she is the type to keep much to herself, so I think she has let things bother her for way too long before having it checked out.

We are very close; more so than I am with my mom. I am an only child, her only grandchild, and I lived with my grandparents for most of my childhood. She/I lost my grandpa 4 years ago this November, and it's kinda killing me thinking about all this now... I have been over to see her almost every day for the past few weeks, to walk her dog and grocery shop for her because she has been in too much pain to get around.

She goes to see the oncologist Thursday. I'm kinda worried.

Sorry to be spilling this... and sorry to hear about your grandma too. Take care.
