"I mean I'm obviously not a serial killer but..."
Sigh. Memorial day weekend was insane stressbusy. Still will be tommorow I imagine.
So I am a manager (lower level - 3rd in command) at a store and today one of the employees was talking about the movie Monster and didn't say anything really outrageous but was basically talking about lesbians in a way that offended me and made me feel bad. It was also as if when they were talking about it they expected me to agree, as in that casual sort of talk that is considered acceptable by many, especially here in the south.
So after work I pulled the employee aside and said they weren't in trouble or anything but that I was offended on a personal level and also that they might just want to watch what is said at work regardless of personal views because you never know who you might be talking to. I let them know that I am bisexual and 2 of our past store managers this year (including the person who hired this person) were openly gay and that our store is supposed to be a discrimination free zone (race, religion, sexuality, etc... per company policy).
I tried to say it sort of quickly so it didn' become a huge deal and ended up saying something like "I mean I'm obviously not a serial killer or anything but..."
I'm not sure if I did the right thing. I hope I did. The employee respoded with "Okay, I don't condone that lifestyle but I won't mention it at work".
Which of course is their right but the words "condone that lifestyle" still made me sad.
I think I also felt the need to mention the company policy because the employee had made a few questionable racial comments in the past such as saying of one of our best customers "that black man looks like a pimp" (he really doesn't) and just sort of emphasizing race. Like when people say The Indian people who live downstairs from me makes too much noise. Its vague and could mean nothing but in combination with other things is just, I don't know... negative...unpleasant.
Sigh....
But now I've had a nice shower. So I feel goooood.
My room smells funky.
I bet theres like a bottle of moldy orange juice under a pile or clothes or something.
Yes.
