Found myself wondering just how long ago our ancestors first tied into psychotropic substances, what they were, and what our forebears did about it.

Beyond the obvious mental alterations, and different ways they may have been interpreted a pronounced effect for several of the candidates is macropsia (enlarged seeing) sometimes in conjunction with mydriasis (puplillary dilation).

I'd suppose such substances taken in moderate doses could have a positive survival benefit - enhanced night vision, for instance.
