So yesterday morning at about 6AM all the electricity in my house became supercharged. About half the lights blew out. The fridge and the heat shut down, and my TV started smoking. Seriously, there was smoke coming out of my TV. Its good to know my surge protectors worked and my computer was OK. Anyways, me and my roomie unplug everything, I flip the breaker and then call my landlord. It being a Sunday, he can't get an electrician over till tomorrow.
I bum a friend's couch for the night and swing back by my place in the morning to pick up my stuff for work. Didn't get home until late tonight so I walk into an apartment at about 10PM that is about 40-45 degrees. The lights are working and there is normal voltage through the outlets, but the fridge, the water, and the heat are still out. My roomie is sleeping in his room with my (the only) electric space heater.

Me: What time did you get home?
Him: About 5.
Me: Did you call the landlord?
Him: No.
Me: You are aware that nothing is working yet.
Him: We have electricity. I'm fine.

There were a bunch of things I wanted to say to him at that point. Fortunately I bit my tongue.

Me: Well, call him in the morning. Don't leave the heater running all day long when you're out. Find your own ride into work in the morning.

And with that, I leave. I am enabling him. He's 22 and he doesn't even have a permit yet. He does nothing. I don't want to leave and get my own place because the kid couldn't survive without me. But is that really my responsibility? Everything in the apartment is mine. All the furnature, all the dishes, even his bed. Do I just leave him high and dry with nothing? Perhaps, this isn't really the right frame of mind to be thinking this.
