Ok I don't mean to be all Rock Historian on you, but this is one more date I can't let go without mentioning. The Beatles made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show on Feb 9, 1964, That's 45 years ago today. The world seemed to be watching that night and for a lot of people it's the date that the world went from black and white into living, vibrant color. It's been said that on Feb 8, 1964 there were no bands in America and on Feb 10 there were a thousand. The Beatles invented garage rock. They turned rock and roll into an art form. They literally changed the world. And we met them here in America 45 years ago today.

Let's put this into some historical perspective. The first wave of rock and roll had died out completely. It was just another fad for the history books. Elvis had joined the army, gone into the movies, and had already become a tired parody of himself. Little Richard found religion. Chuck Berry had been arrested and was in jail. Buddy Holly, of course, died. In fact, the whole rock and roll CULTURE had died. James Dean was gone. Marilyn was gone. It was all gone.

And as a nation, America was still in shock at the assassination of JFK, a young, charismatic president who came promising change (sound familiar). The country was at a loss. Then came these 4 young, funny, smart, witty alien figures armed with some killer songs and some sort of magic. And that's all you could call it-magic. Because somehow over the course of the next 7 years (yes, they were only together for 7 years), the Beatles somehow managed to make some of the most remarkable music ever made- staying ahead of popular culture, growing by leaps and bounds, and taking the whole culture with them. They basically went from being the Backstreet Boys (but better) to Radiohead (but better) in about 3 years. They're widely considered the best band in history, yet the Beatles are STILL underrated. They were more than a band-they were a miracle.

I'm sure you've seen this but do yourself a favor and watch this today. The planet hasn't been the same since. Beatles on Ed Sullivan- Feb 9, 1964.
