Superbowl weekend again.
I don't mean this in any critical way at all. I certainly fall victim to this, but I always think how funny it is how invested people get in the outcome of a game involving a bunch of rich strangers. It's great isn't it? I live literally down the block from Giant's Stadium and all week people have been showing up in the parking lot tailgating. The local paper has been full of stories of people tailgating at the airport before leaving for AZ. People put their lives on hold, lose their mind, spend thousands of dollars to fly across the country, buy new big screen TVs, and generally spend large amounts of money following the actions of people who they will never know. Isn't that odd?
Like I said, I don't mean to sound judgmental or anything like that. I've certainly done some odd things in my time. I just think it's fascinating.
"That's my team," people will say. But if a player is traded (or in Tiki Barber's case, retires) the people hate them. If the team moves the people hate them. None of the players actually come from the city where the team is based anymore (or if they do it's a coincidence). Basically we're rooting for a team of mercenaries whose over-inflated paychecks we pay.
And then, of course, there are commercials featuring monkeys wearing tuxedos, or whatever.

there is no we.
it is like when a couple is asked how the pregnancy is going and the father says "we are feeling alright". you are not the one carrying the baby, you are not pregnant. you are not on the giants, pats, x -name of team. there is no we. you may be a fan, in fact you may be a super fan. you could even be the dumb bloated guy with the frostbitten nipples this morning because you painted your chest blue and sat in twenty degree weather last night.... i dont care who you are... you are not part of the we in reference to the team.
even if you are technically on the giants but sit your butt on the bench week after week and barley made it onto the third string - i still have a slight problem with you saying we.
god, i am a sports elitist bitch. yay.
