So, earlier tonight we had a going away dinner at Frank & Musso in Hollywood for ThePirate, who's moving to NY soon. That was pleasant. Afterward, Shalome headed home and I went to get a couple drinks with some of the other dinner attendees.

I left the bar shortly after midnight.

I walked in the door of our place shortly before 3:30am.

It's about a 30 minute drive down the 101, 5, and 710 freeways at that hour.

Right about now, the more astute of you might be doing the math, and thinking, "But Bean, that doesn't add up at fucking all." And you'd be correct, of course, except for one small detail....

Someone assassinated a foreign head of state on the 710. Well, okay, probably not, but apparently there was some sort of shooting or something not involving a wreck of any sort and a person fleeing on foot from the scene (the scene being the 710 near the 105). It seemed the police arrived on the scene about two minutes before I did, because I was a mere half mile from where they blocked every single goddamn lane going both ways. That spot is where I sat, along with several hundred other cars and a long line of 16-wheelers stretching miles behind me, for over 2 hours.

I got out of my car, finished my pack of cigarettes, and chatted with some of the other motorists. We watched a helicopter shine its spotlight along the edge of the freeway in some foliage. We watched highway patrol officers drive slowly up and down the other side of the opposite lanes with their searchlights blazing. We joked. We wandered. We watched. Then, as curiosity turned to impatience, and impatience turned to frustration, and frustration turned, for some, into anger, we found our ways back to our respective cars....and waited.

Finally, I saw lights behind me start moving, and saw that they had arranged the big trucks to form a sort of lane through the traffic, and were evacuating the cars from the freeway back up an onramp a ways back. It was truly a bizarre experience.

Of course, this means the only parking that was available when I got home was right in front of our loft on the street, which means I have to get up in a couple hours and move it so that it doesn't get towed when the morning rush hour comes and they open that lane for traffic.

UPDATE: Apparently I've been playing too much Grand Theft Auto, because it's following me into real life

In other news, I'm the proud new owner of the Web+Technology group. Thank you, Olivia. biggrin

Speaking of web technology, I picked up Apple's OS X 10.4 "Tiger" Server a few days ago, and today got it all installed on our XServe. It's tasty as fuck. I'm incredibly excited about it.

I'm almost as excited about the new computer I'm building for our newest co-worker, Mistersatan. Upon his arrival in a couple weeks, he'll be greeted with a box made up of these components:

  • Thermaltake Tsunami Black Aluminum Case

  • AMD Athlon 64 3200+

  • 1GB PC3200 DDR400 RAM

  • 200GB 7200RPM SATA HD

  • DVD/CD/CDRW Combo Drive

  • nVidia GeForce 6600 GT 128MB video

  • nVidia SLI-ready motherboard featuring:

  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet

  • 2 PCI-Extreme 16x / 3 Standard PCI Slots

  • 3 Firewire / 10 usb ports

  • 6-channel SATA2 RAID / dual-channel ATA133

  • Integrated SoundBlaster Live 24-bit 7.1 channel surround sound audio

  • ...plus assorted bad-ass add-ons.

Yeah, I know, it's not a mac, but we've got plenty of awesome macs in the office, and, well, we're on a tight-ish budget.

Anyhow, I'll try to start updating more frequently again. I've been sucking about updating since the year started.
