As the sunlight collapsed and night forced itself over this city I moved about the avenues and the streets.
I walked past thrift stores, churches, and men with knives.
In this day a man needs a knife to defend himself against the other men with knives.
I walked past without a knife, finding my hands at my side.
Their hands were clenched to fists and their eyes hadn't seen trust since when they were children.
I used to ride a bicycle everywhere as I child, got scars to prove it.
Now I walked past men with knives, not carrying a knife of my own, not even clenching fists.
I walked past thrift stores, churches, and the worst of our worsts.
They were the ones already dead, I could tell by their eyes.
I had scars which were marks in skin and secrets no one knew.
This day I was okay, I was living, amongst men with knives that had been forgotten.
