Yeah, I LOVE the Velvet Underground. They have always appealed to my gloomy, melancholic side. Lou Reed is a lyrical genius, as far as I'm concerned.
Speaking of Nico, there is an excellent documentary on her that came out about 5 years ago, approximately. A fascinating and tragic woman.

Looking forward is always a good thing, however I am a firm believer that if you forget history, it's doomed to repeat itself...I hope this isn't the case for you...
I want you to do me a favor...this weekend, take a break. Give yourself a vacation from the conflict around you. Sometimes stepping back is the greatest gift you can give yourself and of course will offer up some perspective on the situation.
