so for quite sometime now i've been considering purchasing a digital delay pedal to entertain myself while playing guitar at home...they do some neat shit and i've always suspected that bad brains actually used one while playing their punk tracks in addition to the regae stuff. i've never recieved any confirmation on this suspicsion but i thought that perhaps they had set the effect for a shorter delay so it kind of worked along the lines of a chorus pedal, repeating what you're playing with a touch of off tuning or whatever the layering effect of a chorus pedal actually does. i wonder about that because no one ever really sounded like bad brains on the first self-titled record, not even bad brains sounded like they did, that fast and i thought it may have just been the recording but who knows, it could've been the speed they were on too. i always also wondered about the "jekyl / hyde" punk to regae thing and why they never combined it in one song ala "seed", the sublime song, which is unrelated to what i'm on about but is a fine track.
point of this is don caballero, do their adoring fans not realize that they were all digital delay? are people so enamoured with musicians that they believe they were actually doing that stuff all live? not saying it's bad, but it is sort of boring when you know the trick and aside from that, mick turner of the dirty three did a solo tour where he just noodled with a delay pedal and it was one of the most impressive things i'd seen at the time...it was nothing like the record (tren phantasm) which i also like very much, but it was certainly cool. just something to think about i guess.
