Yeah, you have to start at the beginning just because it lays out the story for you and this season would make no sense at all.
Also, have you seen the show "Carnivale"? We seem to have a lot of the same interests when it comes to tv and movies, so I think this is a show you should definitely check out. The first season is out on dvd, the second hasn't come out yet but is done. Unfortunately, HBO cancelled the series so there is no more, the 2 seasons they had were amazing.
