So my job ended a week and a half ago. The Monday after my last journal, I talked to the parents and told them that I was unhappy about losing so many hours unexpectedly. After some drama, it came down to them offering me 8 extra hours, which barely made up for another unpaid day off (2nd in 2 weeks). So I clarified with the mom the next day what hours I was working and what I was being paid for and she said I'd be paid until 5pm regardless for those 4 days (I usually got off between 5 and 6:30pm). The end of the week comes and time for my pay check. I told the dad the amount and what the mom said and he was confused but wrote the amount anyways. The next Monday, he informs me that there was some confusion and misunderstanding about last weeks pay. They forgot that they said I would be paid until 5 and convinced themselves that the agreement was until 4... 8 hours per day, not 8 extra hours. So, they took those extra 4 hours out of the week's severence pay they gave me. They double screwed me over. Absolutely rediculous.

So, I took advantage of being jobless and came to Arizona to visit since it's been a little over a year since my last trip here. I was supposed to fly back to Seattle last night, but the airline I was flying on... it's computer system was down for 2 hours. They had to start handwriting everyone's boarding passes. After nearly 2 hours in 3 seperate lines, I got my boarding pass about 5 minutes before my flight was supposed to leave. All the while, I'm asking if the flights are going to wait for us and all I got was "They were asked to"... mine left without me. But I didn't realize it when I got to the gate and went to the one next to it thinking it was mine cause the were boarding the last few people on that flight. They didn't look at my ticket thoroughly enough to see that I was going to Seattle and not LA! I get seated in first class cause they were just assigning seat as they come. Then right before they shut the doors I start hearing LA and got back off just in time. Found out that I missed the last flight out for the night. By the time I got back to the check in counters, the computers had just started working again and I got a flight for today. It was an annoying 3 hour visit to the airport. Fortunately, I could come back and stay with family friends for another night. Unfortunately, I left the airport without my luggage. So, I'm hoping I'll be able to find my bag when I get to the Seattle airport tonight.

Back to the real world, and back to my job search whatever
waldo_jeffers:
Sorry to hear that your most recent job didn't work out. The whole idea that someone can take you on to do a job, whether it be to look after their child or anything else, without first agreeing how many hours per week they need you to do, strikes me as being very wrong. It doesn't seem right to take someone on in a job and then say, "Oh, actually we are only going to give you half the amount of hours each week now". They should agree that they want you to work X amount of hours and then pay you for X amount of hours and if it so happens that they decide that they wont need you to look after their kidlet on Thursday because they are off out on a family trip to the seaside, or the pantomime, or whatever, then they should still pay you (and why not, that's how it works in my job - if we get sent home early due to a power cut we still get paid). After all, if you are child minding, then the hours you are working make it hard for you to find another part-time job with which to supplement your income so you are somewhat dependant upon the whims of kidlet's parents.

Good luck in finding a new job soon. smile
