You can usually squeeze a refund out of them. It's defective merch.. how old is it anyways? If it's less than a year that should be under manufacturer's warranty.. especially canon.. i don't know about thier scanners but all of thier cameras come with a hella awesome warranty.. GAH I hate companies that don't take responsibility for the crap they produce...
If you're lookin for something new, I highly recommend the Lexmark X75... it's a printer/scanner/copier dealy.. goes pretty easy on the ink and the price is definitely right at about $80..
