This blog is for those of us who have good relationships with their parents, and a reminder of how lucky we are.
I decided to spend the day with my folks today doing some shopping for Chinese New Years. So we head down to the Vietnamese section of Orange County and do all the usual stuff that would happen when down there, you know, food and all that good stuff. Anyway, there's a big frakking outdoor marketplace right now because everybody's excited about the new year, and fireworks and all that stuff is happening. One thing that I can honestly say I have never seen before was in front of some shops some people had set up little gambling tables, and they were packed. It was funny seeing cops not caring even a little. It was not so funny seeing 9 year olds gambling right there next to the adults though. I mean, on some level, there's awesomeness in seeing a kid go head to head throwing down cash against some 45 year old guy, however that sense of awesome is quickly dissolved when you see said 45 year old guy laugh in the kid's face as he greedily takes his money from him.
Funny thing is that didn't really surprise me. I've come to expect these things when taking a trip to mini Vietnam, however what did bother me was amongst all the gambling and hustling, I saw a blonde girl with a guitar, and some guy next to her, who I can only assume is her boyfriend. So I decide to walk a closer and listen to whatever she's playing. However upon getting within earshot, I realize not only is she not playing, but her dad is five feet in front of her, screaming and shouting like a crazy person. This bastard had to have been at least 7 feet tall. Now let me be clear, he's not shouting to get attention for his daughter, he's shouting at her, I believe he was telling her to go home. It was frakking intense, I had never heard such a concentration of the B and C words. I was genuinely afraid for her. Before I'm able to notice anything else happen some 65 year old security guard is trying to pull the guy back, that is before he gets punched right in the face. The dad at this point realizing what he did gets the fuck out of there, as his daughter starts laughing really loudly. The most fucked up part of the whole thing? The whole time this is happening they are surrounded by probably 100 people in every direction, and no one cared even a little. It was like they just completely tuned out the absurdly loud shouting. Hell, not a single person even bothered to help the old security guard who got clocked in the face, so I helped him up. Shit like this only happens in real life.
Anyway, point of the story is it made me really appreciate the relationship I have with my folks, cause it's so rare nowadays that anybody is able to get along with their parents.
