so... my thoughts/feelings are invalid because they're not popular? regardless of the fact that it's not a democratic vote, it's a relationship with a close [or at least used to be close] friend.
somehow i get the impression i'd not be missing much by stopping contact with them.

Yeah, people like that aren't really worth your time, since they obviously don't think that you're worth their time. You don't need people like that around you.
