(edit - eek! why the weird formatting? now this looks twice as long as it actually is! frown )

last night was the first night in a long while that i've not only gotten to bed at a decent time but also slept in as long as i liked. weird dreams ensued. i wonder what in the world i dreamed about during the time i wasn't getting enough sleep to remember any, or else how long these wacky-ass dreams were sitting in the queue. a dream queue would rock, incidentally.

here are the dreams, handily annotated with the real-life events and items to which they refer.

dream number one:

xie and i were taking some kind of uber-hard programming class(1) together in this enormous educational complex, and it was taught by mr. durham, my art teacher from this past semester(2). we were having some trouble with the class, and the uber-hard final had come, and we were both likely to get screwed, but i knew that they kept some kind of top-secret info on the final in the highest dome room of the complex. so i convinced xie, with great difficulty, that we should infiltrate the dome room, download the info and use it to our advantage in the final. my morals are not normally so low(3), and xie definitely didn't agree with me at first, but i managed to persuade her and we set off.

the building's restricted areas were mostly composed of big, brightly-lit, empty stairwells and large empty passageway rooms, all with fine marble and wall-sconce lighting and a multitude of mirrors along the way. brightly lit empty echoing places make one a bit neurotic when sneaking, but we got all the way up to the very top level of the complex. i think it was a dome room with multiple computers, and overlooked some vast production floor below, and had some girders or other such more techno-industrial feel to it. anyways, we were looking wildly and paranoidly about the room about to make our way to the computers, when a bunch of guard types (all in black, and quite possibly via fecking ziplines) came crashing in and surrounded us(4). we were quite entirely caught, and i believe mr. durham showed up to make some manner of pronouncements over our heads as well, just for the cinematography of it all.

and that's when an odd thing happened - xie remained very much xie, but at the same time she took on some of the qualities of our brother david (most notably his desire to be japanese, and to fit in with japanese culture) and decided that she had dishonored herself (and whatever else) and had to cut off one of her fingers to atone. it was most definitely xie, but she also had this very alien (to me), very stubborn conviction that this was what she had to do (and that it was natural and necessary to do so). try as i might there was no way i could convince her otherwise, even though the idea to cheat had been mine in the first place, and having all one's fingers in a Very Good Thing that is difficult to recreate via artificial means. so we were both busted for cheating, but the thing that really bothered me was that xie cut off one of her fingers, and it was all my fault, cause she was the virtuous and moral one in my dream and didn't deserve that at all. i was the cheating bastard who didn't cut off any fingers and didn't intend to. weird. ness. surreal

dream number two:

i needed to get over to darden to make copies of the work i'd done for my internship this past semester(5). my mom was driving me, and dropped me off in a shopping center (for no particular reason i can tell). i looked around, and there were some cool stores with very nifty dresses and such, but i couldn't buy anything because even in my dreams lately i'm all too aware that i am fucking poor(6). whatever so i left and started walking to darden. there may have been a little hampster with me in this dream(7).

darden was very, very far away, and i walked without feeling any assurance i would get there (in fact the dream ended while i was still only maybe halfway there). my path took me across open fields and other such treeless wilderness, where there were all kinds of wild animals. but primarily bears. i saw many, many bears. each one i came upon was sitting facing away from me, so all i saw were their great furry rumps (they were immense bears, perhaps twice or even three times the size of real bears). but if i caught their attention, they would probably toy with me (very stressful) and chase me (probably not towards darden, either) and kill me (which would just suck). so i endeavored to be as quiet as possible and hoped they didn't catch my scent either. and so i woke up, having traversed great distances infested with bears. the last one i crossed behind near enough to touch. and once i got to darden, i don't know how i expected to get back, either. all the spaces in that dream were expanded and the distances far more dangerous. wee leaving college and entering the real world. eeek

okay, time to start my day.

real life references (RLRs):

(1) i've had programming training for darden tuesday-friday this week, 8:30-5, on microsoft's asp,NET and COM+ environment. was the second class in a series, and i hadn't been there in october when they'd had the first. a bit daunting, because it was quite the serious programming course, though i did well nonetheless. phew. blush

(2) i found out yesterday that i got an A- in durham's class. i think in the end he pegged me as one of those people who is very good at art but doesn't entirely put enough effort into it. hence some internal dispute on my part - i both agree and disagree, given how much work i've had this semester and how long it takes me to produce the art stuff i do. must get better at delegating time, geh.

(3) at the programming training, our instructor, who was a really cool guy with a lot of humor and personality, told us all these funny stories about how he cheated all the way through high school and at several crucial moments in college (high level, extremely difficult classes for which he did virtually no work at all and only even showed up to class on the first day). they were very amusing stories, but at the same time i was a bit confused, just cause he was such a nice guy and didn't seem to feel the least bit guilty about it. and nobody else seemed to be at all surprised either. so even as i was laughing incredulously at his stories (which were really fantastic), i felt internally like some sort of ethical prude, my mouth shaped in a little "o" of prudish shock.

(4) last night i watched some of 'snatch' - dunno how much of the movieness of my dream would be a result of that...

(5) i really do need to do that. i have to show my stuff to prof. proffitt, the guy who sponsored me for the internship, so he can see that i really did do work, that my work really was related to cognitive science, that i learned stuff and that the internship was worthwhile.

(6) i am so fucking poor. i hope hope hope that i have enough money in my bank account to maintain it, and that nothing attempts to draw money - it would necessarily overdraw and i'd get some kind of horrible charge for it. i'm not even comfortable with checking my balance because of that - there's an inquiry fee i very likely can't afford. and i have no pocket money at all. i've been surviving entirely by mooching off stephen for the past couple weeks, and the only way i don't feel dreadful about it is knowing that when i get my first lovely paycheck from my job i'll immediately pay him back. meanwhile, any pretty little thing that catches my eye is viewed as spurious, unnecessary, and as unobtainable as the stars. food is enough of a stretch.

(7) must've came into my dream via megatokyo, in which it may be a reference even to something else. the hampster's name is "boo," so i guess so.
