Yesterday.. was my birthday. The big two-three. I spent it in the most unique way possible: in Canada. You may wonder how different my birthday could be in Canada but it was. For the first part of the day MK and I hung out around her place having a nice brunch consisting of eggs and cheese over toasted bagels which most definitely hit the spot. (PS. her cooking is amazing). Afterwards we both got ready to go out to the Toad, which is a very unique pub in the middle of Winnipeg. It is here that I lost my Canadian beer virginity with many pints of Alexander Keith's and Trad which are two really great beers. Suffice it to say, American beer tastes like poo in comparisson. It will be hard to make the switch back when I go home.

After we had a few drinks at the Toad we made our way to the Cavern which is another pub beneath the Toad that has stand-up comedy, DJs and live music... depending on the night that you are there. Luck woud have it that we had two really good DJs playing old 60s music, some of which I had never heard. The barkeep was dancing behind the bar to the tunes. MK and I would cheer at him and he would throw back his head and laugh

11 o'clock came around and a really good ska band started to play. Have to say that the local music scene here is really good compared to what I'm used to in Ames. All-in-all it was a really good and unique birthday that I was glad I was able to spend it with a new friend of mine that has been a gracious hostess and a very patient person to put up with my quirky deficiencies.

Today I'm one day into 23... and I feel a little bit different. Yesterday I was shrugging it off as it not meaning anything. "Oh it's just another year. There's no significance" but today I know there is. After some intellectually stimulating conversation at the Toad last night, I came to realize that I am entering a point in my life where there are no barriers, and the bounds that once held me back from doing things that I once passionatly wanted to pursue are now available to me. I'm 23... more of a man now then I was 24 hours ago. Although some may beg to differ with some major life-changing decisions that I made in the past six months, but I'm convinced that out of all of the turmoil I was able to find diamonds in a bed of fog.

Today MK and I decided that we need to go rent Wayne's World because we can't stop finding or making refences to that movie. So we decided enough was enough and that we had to put aside all the nostalgia and just rent the movie. I"m sure it will be thoroughly entertaining.

For now a cup of coffee and a walk in the snow sounds wonderful. So I think I"m going to indulge myself.

I found my transition to 23 much more significant than that to 21 (due mostly to the anti-climax factor - here we can drink etc at 18, so 21 doesnt mean that much), but once I turned 24, I felt old (mid 20s - eek!) so enjoy the last year of your early 20s as well as you can biggrin kiss

I was playing my Weakerthans LP and looking at the lyrics sheet.
This song reminded me of our little venture. It's pretty uncanny actually.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

The Weakerthans - Uncorrected Proofs.

The mirrors and the unacknowledged knots
Dial tones and license plates,
and words you didn't choose.
Everything the day's too small to hold,
spills onto the dusk,
and shortens the evening's feuds.
So you fumble for a voice,
and sing happy birthday.

Read it to yourself *again;
stories always end the same.
He can't stay but she won't run;
the fear is where they're calling from.

Stunts the blood from countless tiny cuts,
but we're all out of bandages.
The heater's rattle taunt.
Sifting through translucent shards of glass,
looking for the filament,
that lit the life you want.
So you stumble for the phone,
grasp with chord and you pull.

Will your leadership complain,
stories always end the same.
She can't stay but he won't run;
the fear is where they're calling from.

Afraid is where you're calling from.

Afraid is where we lived for far too long.

If you want it hot off the ripping press let me know. I transferred it from my record player today, so there's a sexy vinyl crackle. smile
