Since my personal website is hosted at work there are some things that I just can't talk about on it... I came into the office yesterday (and today) because they really enjoy giving me more work than any human can shoulder. While I was busy coding my fingers raw, putting more thought and effort into a site than the budget probably allowed for, another co-worker, Jason came in.

"What are you up to?" He asked. A typical query for any fellow employee who enters the office on a weekend. I informed him of my heavy workload and echoed his question back to him.

He was preparing his portfolio. Perhaps it should be said that Jason is a designer and in the visual arts, as you know, when a person prepares a portfolio it's usually because they're trying to be hired somewhere.

Needless to say, there was a bit of an awkward pause. There has been the strong rumor of some layoffs here and I just found out, however obliquely, that Jason was to be amongst the fold. What do you say? How do you respond to something like that?

I did the only thing my fight-or-flight instincts could tell me to do: I ran back to my desk and pretended the short conversation did not take place.
