Ok, I have a little something I need to get off my chest. And that little something is my opinion of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
As far as I can tell, (and this stems mostly from their last hockey season as opposed to the current one), the leafs biggest problem seems to be their fans. Thats right, I'm talking to all you out there that have elevated the team to such a high stature that they are no longer simply a hockey team. Their fans seem to feel that the leafs are infallible, that they are gods gift to hockey.
Yes, maple leaf fans love their hockey team. So much in fact that the Maple Leafs are a highly valued asset of their parent company, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd. This is because the leafs are one of the best loved teams in Hockey (I've heard up to 80% of all hockey fans say they like the leafs almost as much as their hometeams). All of this support from fans equals alot of money coming in to the organization, I'd be willing to bet that its considerably more money than most other organizations have at their disposal. Despite this strong showing of support, the leafs have been unable to win a cup in almost 40 years. Despite all of the support given to them, sometimes they don't even look like they're trying (at this point, I will refer you to their series against Ottawa last year in which they won because of Lalime).
So yes, I have a problem with the fans of the leafs. I want to know what makes you think that management gives a shit about whether the team wins or loses? As long as the money flows in, they're fucking ecstatic. Team owners want money, the fans are the ones who want a cup. The players are caught in the middle. So maybe its time the fans tried something new. Maybe its time we (I am a leafs fan, I'm just unhappy with them at the moment) stopped spending our hard earned money buying merchandise and tickets to see a team that doesn't seem to feel it needs to try and win hockey games. Maybe we should support OHL teams, or drive to Ottawa or Montreal and give them a shot. With a little more help, I'm sure they could shoot straight to the top. Its not as important this season, as the new rules seemed to have levelled the playing field, but I felt it was necessary to point out to the fans that they are being screwed out of the first rate hockey that they deserve, and until they realize that, nobodies going to want to make any changes.
You would not believe how much other leaf fans hate me, but if anybody thinks I'm wrong, I invite them to challenge my idea and produce a better explanation for 40 years of losing hockey games with first rate talent, coaching, facilities, and resources. C'mon, try it, cause I'd really like to be proud of my home team again.
On that note, I was kind of impressed by the leafs play last night. Still too many penalties and too many defensive lapses though.
