MOVIE REVIEWS BY ASTROKREEP23
This Week: Chicago

Why it took me so long to watch this film I do not know. At first I was going to wait until video release, but this film captured/stole more golden globes and emmey nominations than you can shake a stick at so I figured perhaps it was worth it to check it out on the silver screen. Normally the idea of singing and dancing in a movie sends shivers down my spine, that is until I saw Moulan Rouge, which had the same effect on me but in a good way. This film did not send shivers down my spine, however my tail bone did get sore in the two hours I spent in a very uncomfortable theatre chair. When I think musical I think BIG and LOUD! I want choruses and dancers and huge crecendos that capture the hopeless romantic and inner child in me that so many years of CNN and celebrity murders have caused me to repress. This movie didn't quite do that for me, though I must admit I do set a high bar. The movie maintains a steady pace never dropping or rising from its starting mood. Its a fun mood, but you get a little too used to it after a couple of hours. Watching this movie did really make me want to see the broadway version though. It seems to me that while this movie was done well it would seem even more appealing on the stage than on the screen. I must say that the actors really went all out and the directing and cinematography were all great. But its like the mona lisa, you know it was done well, you can tell people it was done well, you can read about how it was done well, and you know extrodinary talent went into it, but at the end of the day it just doesn't excite you. This movie has some good laughs and catchy toons and if you like musicals, or just want to support the film industry in making more, you might want to give it a chance. Don't expect anything too exciting or moving. You won't cry or cheer. You won't get sad or happy. But you will be entertained for a few hours and thats definetly worth something in todays film industry. It's just no Moulan Rouge....
